For my final in GAME 3: Fundamentals of Unreal Engine, we were tasked with making a short animated sequence of a simple story/task. I decided to do a chase sequence.

Process

Animation

First, I scrolled through Mixamo to find the right character models and animations. This informed me of the actions my actors would take. The animation process involved using a mix of found animation assets and additive animation via the game engine’s control rigs.

Cameras

The next week was spent doing camera work using the in-game camera system. This involved the use of virtual crane rigs, camera dolly, and free-floating cameras. While not having a background in film, I blended shots chosen that were either classic or experimental.

Visual Effects

Lastly,VFX were added into shots where it would best benefit. NiagaraFX, the game engine’s custom special effects system, was used for the special effects in some shots. These FX were taken free from the Unreal Engine Marketplace.
